I paint a lot of sylvan themed figures these days, and was delighted to stumble upon treeman from UK comapny Black Tree Design.
This large fellow is called Cedarbaroom Treeman; I enhanced it a little with some dead vine elemnets from my very own house (branches sticking out) and based it on a Wyrd base.

A nice little duel between a Gael Swordmaiden and a Fir-Bolg Flesheater, both from Celtos Miniatures on a large Runic base from Kerr & King

This little scene represents the celebration of a victory over some trolls or ogers (see heads at the bottom of base) where a sexy slave hands a troll bone to her Queen.

And we have a winner !
I placed 2nd with the Queen and slave dio (25 USD gift certificate from Wyrd)

I managed to upgrade the grave golem slightly, but am still not too happy with the static grass I used, suggestions are welcome !
2 miniatures have been finished recently : an otherworld troll (great figure !) and my first ever Wyrd figure, namely the mire golem on a very sweet base from Scibor.
Pictures should be posted coming weekend if the nice weather holds..
I recently bought a treeman from Warhammer (I believe this is the 1st warhammer mini I ever bought !) and a few minor figures here and there, but I haven't decided what to work on next : I have so many undercoated or half finished figures on my desk, I should really try and finish some of them !!!

February hasn't been lazy so far : I have finished 6 nice skellies from Celtos (3 spears + 3 sickles) as well as a huge grave golem from Spinespur.
I just have to finish a few highlights and add some static grass and everything should be ready for photos.
Earlier, I also finished 2 Ilyad minis, namely Magician of the Light + familiar and Standardbearer of the light.

A New Year has started

As usual, it is time to put down my brush and to start reviewing the accomplishments of the previous year, 2008.

I managed to paint no less than 65 figures, which is a new record for me ! It makes an average of 5 to 6 figures a month which is quite decent.

The most figures were painted for Black Scorpion (16), Crocodile Games (12) and Ilyad Games (7). The rest is divided among Reaper (6), Rackham (5), Maidenhead (4), Eureka (4), Fenryll (2), Celtos (2), Dark Age (2), Mars Ultor (2), Shadowforge (1), Ebob (1), and Magnificent Egos (1).

The main themes were Pirates (21) and Egyptian Basti (12).

The "newcomer" of the year was Ilyad Games with 7 painted figures, and a lot more to come !

So what is next ?
Thanks to good sales of different figures on ebay, I was able to increase my miniature budget substantially and bought a lot of figures towards the end of 2008 to take advantage of Xmas sales and a low Pound Sterling !
So there could be :
- Celtos figures (Gaels mostly)
- Ilyad games figures
- Black Scorpion pirates (I have to finish them all)
- Reaper Miniatures
- Crocodile Games ( Olympos figures)
- Heresy figures
- Fenryll
- Bronze Age (some nice pirates there !)

On the immediate agenda are 3 more figures from Ilyad, 1 from Bronze Age.
I just finished 2 mini dioramas on a 60mm base of Maidenhead figures and Celtos, an evil treeman from Fenryll, and a nice female warrior from Celtos. I might reserve the finished figures for a contest and actually expected a Femme Fatale contest to start in January, but instead Wyrd decided to start off the year with the 6th edition of the Iron Painter !
I'm not too fond of this contest because I'm not yet ready to compete on themes like OSL, gold NMM etc..
I'm also thinking of changing my camera, I'll have to improve my photo skills and maybe try my hand at photoshop or paint shop pro to make some better pictures for contests and for this blog of course.

ok, the results of the Crocodile Games contest are in, and I didn't win anything, except for a limited edition miniature (Basti painter) given to all participants.

The Wyrd Rotten Harvest contest is still running : I managed to get 3 entries : 1 single miniature and two dioramas. Not too proud of my entries this time...
Still october has been busy, and including the contest figures, more than 20 minis were painted !!!
The minis that didn't make it for the contests because of the theme or quality of painting will be posted here first after I take appropriate pictures.
My pirate collection is growing : I have to find a solution for a proper background or terrain for photography, maybe a nice sandy beach ?

May was for Maidenhead, and October is next !
So what ! I've been lazy, and I really have no excuse except that I needed to take a break from building and painting.
As for building, I actually bought the latest moulds from Hirst Arts and toyed with some pipe projects but haven't painted anything yet.
As for miniatures, I am currently busy buying a lot of Ilyad Games miniatures from the "Le Retour des Dieux" and Chroniques de la Lune Noire" ranges : those are fantastic resin figures, among the best ever sculpted( especially the Vorag Barbarians); unfortunately they were quite pricey and apparently did not receive the commercial success they deserved, so this French company disappeared. Now these figures have become collectors items and I was lucky enough to find some rare ones here and there; some I got really cheap and try to sell them on ebay to recoup the total cost..the hunt goes on !
Contestwise, I took some new shots of my Basti warband + the lovely priestess to see on http://www.crocodilegames.com/newforum/index.php?showtopic=4216 and
http://www.crocodilegames.com/newforum/index.php?showtopic=4212 under Art-de-Vivre.
Given the other entries, I won't be able to win anything, but I'm quite happy with my minis anyway.
October is also Halloween season with its famous Rotten Harvest contest from Wyrd Miniatures : as usual I can't really say what I'm working on this time but a few monsters and minis are on the way, so be prepared !

I have been plagued by a poor internet connection these last 2 weeks, so I was unable to update this blog.
I managed to paint 4 more Pirates from Black Scorpion Miniatures (I have 12 now) + 1 from Magnificent Egos.
Also, I finished painting a Priestess of Bast to complete my range of Crocodile Games Miniatures.
Finally, I couldn't resist painting 2 OOP Fomor Sirens from Celtos.
The good news is that I finally laid my hands on a decent matte varnish spray (GW)which enabled me to dull the shiny aspect of my figures : I'll retake the last pictures as soon as I can and will post all of the new stuff hopefully next weekend..
Next on my workbench are 4 beautiful figures from little known (undeservingly so !) Australian manufacturer Maidenhead Miniatures : they are already based on 40mm or 50mm round bases from Wolvesbane and Kerr & King. They are slightly larger than other figures (I ll' have to measure, but my guess is closer to 35mm than 32mm). They will be undercoated white tonight...

2007 wasn't a very good year for me for several personal reasons, but 2008 promises to be much better : I have a hobby room, plenty of paint and tons of lead; also some silicon moulds and a few kilos of plaster for buildings, so I'm all set.
To start the new year, I'll enter the next painting contest hosted by Wyrd, namely Femmes Fatales III
As usual, I cannot post or describe my entries until after the contest, so please be patient.
So far, I painted the incredible amount of 12 minis, and more are coming : I still have until Feb 25. to finish painting, taking pictures and posting so there should be some time for a few more..Cheers !

New buildings

About six years ago, I built this Roman Prison Tower for the first time ansd decided to use a new tinting technique : I experimented with cold coffee (lefttover from my wife's heavy drinking) and was agreeably surprised. The blocks absorbed different levels of coffee, thus giving more or less darker tones which look quite natural.
Unfortunately, at the same time the waterbased glue that I used did not hold up and my whole building collapsed, leaving only rubble.
I put the blocks away and rediscovered them only recently and decided to rebuild and here you are :

A closeup view of details; the ivy is quite alright and the painted figure from Rackham compliments the whole scene nicely. The basing is done on a regular CD + some Xmas paper ('tis the season).

This is my latest project based on the newest mould from Hirst Arts.
It is a fairly large model and I will have trouble finding the right spot for exhibiting it.

I finally managed to create my hobby atelier in my new house; the Rotten Harvest III entries for Halloween were done relatively quickly with the material on hand, but actually some figures did not make the cut because they were not deemed "worthy" yet and still need some improvement.

Next in line is a building project : I dug out my Hirst Arts moulds and decided to build one of the castle ruins shown on Bruce's website.
I have a new painting scheme in mind and a few surprises such as ivy and a nice base.
I expect to finish early December and will try and post WIP pictures.

not much happening, I'm afraid : just building a few of the new moulds from Hirst Arts (Rock Cavern) and preparing for the ongoing Wyrd Minis contest.
My diorama is almost ready : 1 figure is painted, the other one needs a few more hours and the cd base is practically done as well.
I cannot post pics before the end of the contest, so please check again mid-July for a nice little diorama.
I'll be moving back to France mid-July, so I'll be busy packing some terrain pieces and minis, so don't expect anything new before September when I settle in my new hobby room in Samoreau near Paris.

Although I've been gone to France for 2 weeks, I've been busy and managed to finish some figures started long time ago and kept aside for lack of inspiration. Sleepless nights have some good sides as well..
Anyway, I hope to post some pictures this weekend of 5 Dark Age Buzzblades (including 3 converted figures), 1 Kaustic, maybe Hoodoo (90% done) and finally a Rackham figure on a custom base (Kelt Son of Ogmios)
This should allow me to tackle some really new figures : should I get on with Dark Age figs in order to have a maximum of painted figures for the "grand finale" farewell game in August ?
Or should I try and paint the beautiful Dreamwarrior I bought in Paris (the latest Daïkinee from Rackham) since I already based it on a Microarts Studio forest base, pinned the arm and undercoated white ...

The colour schemes are similar although the top one is a Forsaken and the bottom one a Skarrd.
Saber's base attracted quite a few compliments : I tried one of the Microartstudio bases I bought in Paris last time.

Not knowing what to present in the ongoing Femme Fatale contest, I have launched a massive number of simultaneous painting projects (2 Rackham, 1 BronzeAge, 2 CrocodileGames, 4 Gamezone, 1 Hasslefree, 1 Fenryll, 2 DarkAge, 1 Newbold) and will choose the best as entries.
Should I post some WIP this weekend ?
Probably not, or I risk being disqualified, so I'll only post pictures of those that will not be entered...

A new year !

2007 has started and I realized that I haven't contributed anything since Oct 15 last year !
Mostly I was away on business in November and December and 3 weeks in France over X-Mas.
So, a new year and a fresh start !
As always I'll begin by reviewing last year's accomplishments which sadly will be less than in 2005.
In 2006, I managed to :

- paint 43 minis (9 Fenryll, 7 Rackham, 7 Dark Age, 6 Excalibur, 5 Eureka, 4 Hasslefree etc..)
- build a full gameboard for Dark Age
- build 6 diorama pieces
- participate in 6 online contests

Overall 2006 was surprisingly more productive than 2005 (43 minis up from 38 in 2005).
What's the outlook for 2007 ?
Well, I will be moving next summer, probably back to Europe after 5 years spent in Malaysia, so there will be some time lost with moving, selling cars and stuff, last trips in Asia etc.. not to mention work which will keep me quite busy until April at least.
In the next few weeks however, I will try and participate in the latest Wyrd Games contest (Femme Fatale 2 : http://www.wyrd-games.net/ ).
Also on the workbench is my first dragon from Reaper...

I will try and enter the Rotten Harvest contest with its Halloween theme, but since I'm leaving for France on Oct 21, I only have 1 week for the 3 dioramas I have in mind.
I selected (a lot of) minis and will build approopriate terrain, but will I have time for everything ? Basically, I will need to build and paint nonstop until next Friday and take pictures on Saturday before leaving for the airport...

no excuse, I've been lazy !
But not totally idle : against better judgement, I started building some new terrain pieces based the latest sci-fi moulds from Hirst Arts.
They are coming along nicely and although the paint job is not the best, everything looks great !
Will try and post pictures in the week-end..
Still waiting for my Wargods and Wolvesbane orders though....
